You can choose not to gamble
A casino hotel contains a gambling environment, even if your reason for visiting is a meal or an overnight stay. Gambling can cause financial loss, addiction and harm to relationships or wellbeing. Choosing a hotel without a casino is a valid alternative, particularly if gambling has caused difficulties before.
If you decide to gamble
- Only do so where it is legal and you meet the local age and identification rules.
- Set a time limit and an amount you can afford to lose in advance. Keep essential living and travel money separate.
- Do not borrow to gamble, chase losses or treat gambling as income.
- Avoid gambling when distressed or impaired by alcohol or other substances.
- Stop when you reach a limit. A limit does not make gambling risk-free.
Notice when it stops feeling optional
Spending more time or money than intended, hiding gambling, borrowing money or repeatedly trying to recover losses are reasons to pause and seek support. You do not need to wait for a crisis to speak with someone.
Finding support wherever you are
Gambling Therapy
Gambling Therapy, a service of Gordon Moody, provides free online practical and emotional support for people affected by gambling, including family and friends. It offers live support and a directory of help by location.
To find the service, enter gamblingtherapy.org in your browser. Availability and language support depend on the service. This is an independent support organisation, not a hotel or casino operator.
You can also contact a local health professional or an established gambling-support service in your area. Ask about self-exclusion and other barriers to gambling if appropriate. The journal's contact mailbox is for editorial matters and is not a counselling or emergency service.
Age and scope
This journal is intended for readers aged 21 and over. That editorial threshold does not replace local law: hotels, casinos, bars and individual activities may have different admission rules. This information is general guidance and does not replace individual professional support.
